Specs at a glance: GVWR 34,700 lb, Detroit DD13 diesel 12.8L 500hp engine and 128,843 miles.
Here is a hauler that does not come through our doors often. This is a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia set up as a custom hauler, finished in Freightliner white with 128,843 original miles. Under the hood is the Detroit DD13 rated at 500 horsepower and 1,854 lb-ft of torque, backed by the DT12 automated twelve speed, the same drivetrain running loaded interstate freight every day. It is a two door cab with a full sleeper behind the seats, so you get huge overhead storage and soft touch walls without giving up a foot of trailer length. It comes with two brand new air ride leather diamond stitch front seats and a rear diamond stitch leather bench seat that folds down into a bed. Right now it is set up to pull both bumper pull and fifth wheel, and it can easily be configured for gooseneck. Six brand new tires were just installed. This truck is a third answer, and it is the one that makes the least sense on paper until you drive it. You are getting a Class 8 Detroit DD13, 500 horsepower, 1,854 lb-ft of torque, full air brakes and a 34,700 pound GVWR for substantially less money than a new three quarter ton pickup costs today. Nothing about the way it pulls, stops or holds a trailer on a grade compares to a pickup, and the difference is not subtle. The Cascadia is a two door cab with a sleeper, which is exactly the layout the hauler crowd asks for. The interior comes with two brand new air ride leather diamond stitch front seats, and behind them a rear diamond stitch leather bench seat that folds down into a bed. That gives you seating for passengers on the way to a show and a real place to sleep once you get there, not a token bunk. Cabinets and overhead storage run the width of the back wall, and soft touch quilted panels keep road noise down. The front seats ride on air, so you can set one up for a two hour run or a two day one. The cab itself is clean throughout, the air conditioning blows cold, and it carries the full gauge package with axle temperature, transmission temperature, turbo boost and dual air pressure. Cruise control, traction control, hill start assist, driver controlled differential lock and a CB radio are all here. Underneath, this one is set up to work. It runs full air brakes with the gladhands and trailer cord to pull an air brake trailer, air ride rear suspension with an in cab dump valve, and a sliding fifth wheel with a lock switch on the dash. The rear bumper carries a receiver hitch and a pair of heavy D-rings for bumper pull duty, and a gooseneck ball can be added without cutting anything up. There are aluminum diamond plate toolboxes down both sides for chains, straps and tools, and the truck holds 100 gallons of diesel, so you are planning fuel stops around the trip rather than around the tank. Towing Ability With 500 horsepower and 1,854 lb-ft of torque through the DT12 automated twelve speed, this Cascadia does not know a loaded trailer is behind it. The DT12 is a two pedal box, so there is no clutch to work in traffic and no torque converter to overheat on a grade, and it holds the right gear on a climb instead of hunting for one. Full air brakes and a 34,700 pound GVWR mean the truck stops the load rather than being pushed by it, and the engine brake holds your speed on a long descent instead of leaving you riding the pedal. That is the single biggest difference between this and a pickup pulling the same trailer. Whether you are hauling a fifth wheel toy hauler, a gooseneck stock trailer, a car hauler or heavy equipment, it is already set up for bumper pull and fifth wheel, and we can add a gooseneck before it leaves.
